Last Friday, February 15th students, faculty, tutors, and other people interested in Turkish or Turkic languages attended the Turkish Flagship’s annual Turkish Poetry Night. This was a rare opportunity to exchange, recite, and become more knowledgable about the rich Turkish poetic tradition. Nearly everyone at the event recited at least one poem, with some individuals reciting two or three. Some of the poets represented were Murathan Mungan, Yahya Kemal Beyatlı, Attila İlhan, Cahit Sıtkı Tarancı, Ahmet Selçuk Ilkan, and Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi. There were refreshments and prizes for the best performers in each of three categories: Turkish learners, native speakers of Turkish, and speakers of other Turkic languages. Overall, the night was a fascinating window into Turkish poetry and an excellent opportunity for students of Turkish and Turks alike to experience the beauty of Turkey’s poetic legacy.
