On Friday, February22nd students participated in tabling at the Model UN Pizza and Social Night from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the School of Public and Environmental Affairs. This was an excellent opportunity to promote the Flagship with high school students, and to encourage those planning on attending IU to join the Flagship. Students expressed significant interest in the program, and were curious as to the ways in which the Turkish Flagship Program differed from the Arabic, Chinese, and Russian Flagships and the benefits of learning Turkish and understanding Turkish culture in general.
In discussing the benefits of choosing to learn Turkish over other critical languages like Mandarin and Arabic, the simple grammar, clear vocabulary, and latin alphabet tend to be emphasized. In addition, the geo politically and economically critical status of Turkey as an intermediary between Europe and the Middle East is also a primary focus. Students also convey the core features that make the program distinct, such as one on one tutoring with a native speaker and a wide variety of fascinating talks and cultural presentations.
