Derya Dogan gave an interesting workshop on the practice of translation between languages, and the potential areas of difficulty or confusion in rendering writing from one language into another. She presented students with a direct English translation of various Turkish idiomatic expressions, which demonstrated the linguistic complexities in translation that arise from variations in phrasal meaning. Students were surprised by the realities of the difficulty of Turkish-English translation, and were undoubtedly better prepared for future translation opportunities after the presentation. This workshop was especially interesting due to its interactive nature, as students were able to experience firsthand the nuances of translation.
