Introductory Turkish :
Turkish Up! Turkish is a critical language spoken by 88 million people, not only in Turkey but in Central Eurasia and Germany as well. It's a key language for national security, international business, and the non-profit sector. This is a great opportunity to learn about Turkish language and culture. Students will gain speaking, reading, listening, and writing skills in a fun, interactive, and supportive environment.
Contemporary Turkey :
This course will introduce the political, social, and cultural history of modern Turkey, from its late Ottoman origins to the recent past. We will briefly look at historical developments in the Turkish state from the late 19th century to the early 21st century with a special emphasis on recent decades and current events.
Ottoman Classical Age :
Trace the Ottoman Empire from its beginnings to its height under Süleyman the Magnicent. These include: Turks before the empire; Asia Minor before the Turks; rival principalities; centralization; Ottomans as European and Middle Eastern; economy, society, religion, learning; ethnic/cultural diversity; and the "classical age" as a concept. This course is intended to provide students with a solid foundation so they can pursue further specialized study in the history of the Ottoman Empire, the Modern Middle East, and the Eastern Mediterranean.
